Hopkins celebrated another Veteran's Day assembly, showing our gratitude and appreciation for the sacrifice on the part of our military. I know not everyone is a fan of war, warfare, or military action, but when it is needed I am so grateful for brave men and women who leave the comforts of home and family to protect and serve the ideals of freedom. As I watched the many pictures of the veterans and active military personnel in our slideshow I felt a mixture of pride and regret. I am extremely proud of what America is about and the role we have played in making a safer, freer world, but I regret the great pain, loss and sacrifice that comes with it. It is not just the sacrifice of the men and women leaving home, but what the spouses and children left at home give as well. I think of my grandmother who stayed home and raised children on her own while Papa Ralph was away. And the hurt and pain that comes back with those who serve, affecting life months and years after the homecoming - not just for those returning, but for those who never left. My heart goes out to those who served, those serving now and those who stay behind...my life is richer for what you give!
So proud to be part of a school community that honors those who serve and teaches my children to appreciate what has been done for them. As my baby girl cried today when she saw Papa Cookie's picture I hurt for her, but I was also so grateful that compassion and gratefulness is growing in her heart!
Millie helped honor her Great-Grandfather Frank Robbins, Papa Rick and Papa Cookie by serving in the scout color guard! So proud of what a beautiful, sweet girl she is!
Ruby and class singing the U.S. Marines anthem...I was a little slow on the uptake (sorry!)
