Last weekend was our official first attempt at camping in Colorado. We took the four hour trip into the mountains (to Steamboat Springs) with three other couples to commune with nature. The first evening was pretty much consumed with setting up our new $67.00 tent (in my opinion a real steal) and sleeping bags. The six person tent quickly became a canopy bed of sorts as we stuffed two queen blowup mattresses inside. The tent sides were bulging quite awkwardly, but we slept comfortably. The best part about it it was that with no room for anything else, all you had to do was slip off your shoes, open the tent door and you were in bed. The girls had a lot of fun bouncing around in it (a poor man's substitute for the moonwalk....gives me an idea for our next birthday party). We did a little hiking, splashing in the river, and fishing. The girls even gave it a Girl Scout feel by creating wood crafts - Millie used our firewood to build log cabins and later the girls used markers to create art on the flat pieces. Millie then used the leftover wood to build a shop where she attempted to sell the art to our companions. She made quite a haul - at least $2.00 in change. Maybe it is time to consider an allowance....
All in all, I think the trip was a success. With only one injury (poor Ruby) and minimal whining (again poor Ruby) I think the Wachter girls put on a good show. The great weather (90 during the day and 50 at night) helped and overall I learned a ton. I think we even contributed a thing or two to the camping success - I only used three squares of chocolate in the smores (compliments of Sarah B.) and they were the best ever! And tell me please - what is more important than smores when it comes to camping?
I think this picture of Ruby sums it up best....
